Great Joy
Kate DiCamillo's picture book Great Joy is a poignant one to read during this time of economic crisis. I am a bit miffed at how heartless the mom seems, but I also recognize that hurried and tunnel-vision element of middle-class adulthood, while Frances, the child, is in the moment and connects with the person she sees.

We LOVE Great Joy!
When we read it last year, I disliked the mother too, and saw her as heartless... but this year I see her differently. I think she must have a lot on her mind - a husband off at war and a daughter full of questions she can't answer, worried about problems she can't solve. Luckily, Frances shows us that it doesn't take much to share peace and friendship and great joy.
